Method of writing accurate servo tracks on tape

An improved servo writer that records servo tracks with high precision. The tape is moved from a supply reel to a take-up reel by two reel motors, without using a tape motor. The speed of the tape is measured by a sensor. Based on input from the sensor, the frequency of the clock of the write pattern generator is adjusted so that the servo patterns are written at the correct intervals, independent of tape speed. Guiding of tape is improved by the absence of a tape motor. The improved servo writer offer several advantages: the accuracy of the track locations on tape increases, the accuracy of the timing information is improved, while the cost of the servo writer is reduced.
